Living a fulfilling life is still possible through counseling. It’s true that life is constantly changing. While we can’t always control the events that happen to us, we can learn to navigate every high and low. JCA Mental Health equips you with the coping skills and confidence needed to handle anxiety and continue moving toward your goals.
Anxiety is a normal physiological response that is designed to keep us safe. While small amounts of anxiety are normal and even helpful in certain situations, ongoing stress can have devastating effects. Many of us feel pressured to have it all together, and it’s too easy to have our worries dismissed or minimized.
Anxiety is highly subjective, and you may not be certain whether your stress is healthy or not. Consider these questions:
For some, anxiety comes in waves, while for others, it’s marked by panic attacks, phobias, and strong physical symptoms. You’ve likely heard of the phrase “fight or flight,” which refers to the immediate reaction a person has to potential danger. A public speech, running late to work, or receiving a passive-aggressive email can all trigger anxiety. While modern stressors may not put us in immediate danger, our bodies still perceive them as so.
Managing stress can be hard due to the abstract nature of many of our fears, and it can get to the point that it interferes with your life, relationships, self-esteem, and well-being. However, know that you don’t have to feel “broken” to go to therapy. We can all benefit from reassessing our thoughts and understanding how they influence our everyday lives.
Coping with anxiety often involves understanding why you’re experiencing it in the first place. Anxiety is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. For some, it is the result of a traumatic experience, such as abuse. Anxiety also affects marginalized identities and those experiencing repeated stressful situations. LGBTQIA++ folk and BIPOC individuals often face stressors and trauma unique to their identities.
